For any wildlife enthusiast and big cat lover, the thrill of spotting a tiger or a leopard in the wild is an unforgettable experience. Having spent time in Tadoba Tiger Reserve, those memories will always remain fresh in my mind. But if I were to pick a favorite, Kabini Tiger Reserve in Karnataka would top the list. The dense forests, vibrant greenery, high wildlife activity, and its close proximity to Bangalore—just a 4-hour drive—make it an irresistible destination for every wildlife lover.
First Encounter with a Tigress in Kabini
My first visit to Kabini was nothing short of exhilarating. The excitement of exploring the forest, the anticipation of sightings, and the sheer beauty of the wilderness left me in awe. As the safari progressed, we were lucky enough to sight a female tigress post 6:30 PM. This marked my second tiger sighting in South India, my first being in Bhadra three years ago. However, while the moment was surreal, I faced a slight disappointment—the photograph I captured was extremely noisy due to shooting at ISO 25600 in low-light conditions. The thought of getting a perfect, crisp shot kept running in my mind throughout the night.
A Leopard’s Elusive Presence
The next day, my expectations soared even higher. The dense Kabini forest is known not just for its tiger population but also for its magnificent leopards. As luck would have it, we did get a leopard sighting—but only its leg hanging from a tree! The frustration was real; knowing that a magnificent predator was right there but not getting a clear view was almost painful. A sighting is one thing, but seeing an animal in its full glory is another level of excitement.
Planning the Second Trip
The disappointment from my first trip fueled my eagerness to return to Kabini. And in just three months, my second trip was set. Three days, multiple safaris, and high hopes—it was all lined up for an unforgettable adventure.
The first two safaris had regular sightings of deer, langurs, and wild elephants, but no big cats. However, on the third day, our confidence was unwavering. As we set out on our safari, the excitement was palpable. “This is the day!” I told myself. We searched for the tell-tale signs of tiger presence—alarm calls, pug marks, and movement in the dense undergrowth.
The Thrill of a Sub-Adult Tiger Sighting
Towards the end of our safari, a sudden burst of excitement took over as someone exclaimed, “Tiger! Tiger!” And there it was—a stunning sub-adult tiger relaxing by the roadside. The commotion from the safari jeeps made the tiger move towards the bushes, and just as we thought the sighting was over, another call came—“There is another tiger!”
Our excitement doubled. Another sibling lurked nearby, but despite our best efforts, we couldn’t get a clear view. The dense foliage provided excellent camouflage, making it a game of patience and sharp observation.
Leopard Sighting and the Ultimate “L” Sign
Having successfully checked off “stripes” (tiger sighting) from our list, the next goal was to find “spots” (leopard) and, if lucky, the legendary black panther (fondly called Blackie by wildlife enthusiasts). The following day, we had multiple tiger sightings, making it a dream run. But I was still on the lookout for the elusive leopard.
During our last safari, as we made our way back to the tigerscape, another Jungle Lodges & Resorts (JLR) safari jeep gestured toward us with their fingers forming an “L” shape. While some might mistake it for a taunt, I knew exactly what it meant—“Leopard!”
The kid inside me screamed with joy! “Weeeeee!”
This time, I was lucky. Though the leopard was perched far away on a tree, I could clearly see its majestic form blending beautifully with the little greenery left despite the approaching summer. The sight was mesmerizing, and I cherished every second of it.
Final Thoughts and Future Plans
Both my trips to Kabini had been incredible. I had the privilege of witnessing both stripes and spots—tigers and leopards. But there’s always room for more. This time, my experience was better than the last, and I can’t wait for my next visit, hoping to finally catch a glimpse of the legendary black panther.
Kabini Tiger Reserve is truly the southern paradise of big cats, offering thrilling encounters, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable memories. Whether you are a wildlife photographer, a nature enthusiast, or a traveler seeking adventure, Kabini is a must-visit destination.
